For a holiday abroad, there are plenty of accommodation choices. A lot of people like to stay in hotels because it is a convenient and cheap accommodation form. Whilst there, there is always plenty to do.

For those who are arriving by aeroplane, there is usually the option to be collected by a travel representative of the particular company and escorted to the hotel by coach. During this time, it is likely that the representative will point out various features of the resort and its surrounding area so that it is easier for holidaymakers to plan some places to visit, and to have an idea of how far away they are from the hotel.

There is often a board or a desk set up ready for the arrival of the holidaymakers that points out the various excursions or trips that can be taken. There are a lot of different types, such as walking trips to historic sites and ancient castles, or days out to theme parks and various water parks.

There are usually places for the evening pointed out too, including restaurants and bars that may also have entertainment like live music. Another option is to stay in the hotel for the evening, as there is plenty of entertainment within the grounds. This usually begins with entertainment for children, which is usually a mini disco comprising of international songs and dances, and normally some games with small prizes like sweets or a non-alcoholic cocktail.

Following this, the entertainment tends to move towards an older style that is nonetheless family friendly, which could be bingo or karaoke, for example. This will be a short activity to last until the main show. These are sometimes performed by outside acts like magicians or dance groups, or could simply be the entertainment staff putting on their rendition of a popular musical or stage show. There may also be the opportunity for audience participation in some shows.

To end the evening there is usually some music played until midnight with a dance floor available. Families with younger children may choose to end the night here, but those who would prefer to continue into the night may utilize the hotel bar, which often stays open slightly later than midnight, and serves a wide range of drinks. There are also places outside of the hotel that can be visited, such as nightclubs or beach parties extending into the night.

Clubs are often available for children, which are primarily offering daytime activities such as arts and crafts and games. There are sometimes evening sessions that offer slightly different activities like watching films, often at a slower pace to prepare the children for going to sleep. Sometimes there is a sleepover evening, which may be purely for the enjoyment of the children, or could be an aid for parents who wish to spend an evening elsewhere.

Eating arrangements differ for each holiday, but there will usually be three meals offered. A common choice is to take the half board option, which means eating breakfast and only one other meal, which can often mean eating lunch in the hotel and eating the evening meal at an outside restaurant. Many hotels also offer full board and all inclusive offers, which include all meals, drinks and snacks, although this inevitably adds to the expenses.
