postheadericon Soft Versus Aluminum Rifle Cases

by Shannon L. Hilson

Gun owners everywhere are throwing away their soft firearms cases and replacing them with aluminum rifle cases. Why are they doing it? It is because they care about their firearms and know that aluminum gun cases are the way to go if you want to keep your rifle in top condition. They also know that they have a responsibility to keep their firearms out of the hands of the wrong users. Just a few minutes reflection will tell you that there is no good reason to choose soft cases over aluminum gun cases.

No self-respecting gun owner doesn't treat his firearm with the utmost care. Just as you would never leave it propped up against a tree exposed to the elements for days at a time, you don't want to travel with a rifle that is not fully protected against water, dust and dirt. Why spend all that time cleaning it if it is just going to get dirty again before you can even use it? Aluminum gun cases are the choice of gun owners who love their firearms. Not only do aluminum rifle cases offer superior protection against the elements, they offer superior protection against damage from impact.

Now consider what you get with a case made from a soft material. Even if the label says it is made from water-resistant or waterproof material, experience will show you that while the material may be waterproof, the seams and zippers are not. Who is to say that you won't be out in the woods hunting when a sudden rain storm comes? If you've ever been out camping and used a "waterproof tent," you already know that water can and does find its way into the tent. The same thing is true of soft cases, but not aluminum rifle cases.

When you think about it, it becomes clear that aluminum rifle cases are far superior to soft cases for the protection of your rifles when you're outdoors. Imagine yourself out in the woods carrying a soft case over your shoulder. It swings about and if the terrain is uneven or you're moving fast, you need both hands free when you're on the move. It's easy for the case to shift away from your body and knock against a tree or a stone. What if the rifle has a scope attached to it? You know how sensitive rifle scopes are. Just a tiny bump can throw it off and it becomes virtually useless. A marksman needs his scope to be perfectly adjusted and so do you. Only aluminum gun cases provide the level of protection your scope needs.

Aside from these practical considerations, you always need to keep gun safety uppermost in mind. While aluminum rifle cases are superior to soft firearms cases while they are being transported, does your rifle need that level of protection when it is being stored? After all, rifles are kept in some sort of storage far more often than they are being transported or used.

When storing a rifle, what you need to think about the most is security and here again, aluminum rifle cases are far superior to soft cases. Aluminum gun cases are virtually fully tamper proof. They have double locking systems and the latches cannot be pried open.

Now that you have compared the two, is there any reason why you would want to buy a soft case for your firearms? Could it be because soft cases are cheaper than aluminum ones? In fact, quality aluminum rifle cases are very inexpensive and far outlast soft cases, so no, even price is not a factor to consider.
