Rescuing Is The Way To Go
It has become a common controversy. Why should you go to a rescue or shelter instead of a breeder? What about all the free ads on CraigsList? If you are looking to add a new fuzzy family member where should you go?
There are some staggering statistics that probably will make a difference: * Did you know that 50% of all animals turned into shelters are purebred? * Did you know that 71% of cats entering the shelter system are euthanized? * Did you know that most cats entering the shelter system are never reunited with their families because they have no ID tags? * Did you know that only 24% of cats in a shelter are adopted?
I am sure these numbers surprise you as they do me. Cats are surrendered to a rescue for many reasons the common ones being that the people are allergic, cannot afford their care or in this economy are losing their homes. If the cat turned in has any sort of issue whether behavior or medical they are typically euthanized.
Shelter pets are a great choice as they come "ready to go"! They are always spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, tested for FeLV/FIV and sometimes HW and usually medically healthy. Some shelters even have programs that offer free insurance for the first month and a highly discounted rate thereafter.
Most folks do not realize that there are two types of shelters: those managed by a city and typically euthanize and those that are no kill. Please do realize that the people that work for shelters that euthanize would certainly rather not do so. There lack of space gives them no other option. Low kill shelters do not euthanize unless an animal has a truly poor quality of life. In reality, there is no such thing as a no-kill shelter as they all have to deal with euthanasia of some sort.
Supporting a local shelter helps raise awareness and funds for that group. Ultimately, you are also truly making a difference by saving a life!
