THE
THE NEAPOLITAN MASTIFF CLUB
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The purpose of the Neapolitan Mastiff Club
is to ensure the care,
well-being and welfare of the
Neapolitan Mastiff.
To protect the breed against abuse,
neglect and unethical practices.
To promote the development of
the Neapolitan Mastiff here in the UK
to the highest possible standard.
The Neapolitan Mastiff Club
therefore
intends, by action and example,
to abide by the Clubs Code
of Ethics in
all aspects pertaining to the breed
and encourages all
its members to do the same.
CODE OF ETHICS
1. MEMBERSHIP ETIQUETTE.
(a) All members shall endeavour to ensure that:
at all times all dogs that they are responsible for
are properly housed, fed, watered and exercised.
That all dogs will receive
proper veterinary attention
as and when required. That all dogs are kept
under control in public places
and will never be left in the
care of unsupervised children.
(b) All members shall endeavor to behave
in a manner befitting ownership
of a Neapolitan Mastiff.
To be honest in their dealings
with prospective owners,
fellow owners and breeders.
Exhibit sportsmanlike conduct in all competition.
Be willing to contribute towards a programme
of improvement within the breed and never
become embroiled in any activity, which might render
the breed liable to adverse media attention.
2. BREEDING.
(a) All members shall endeavour to ensure that:
All breeding is carefully planned
with the health and
temperament of the bitch and stud dog
of primary importance.
Neapolitan Mastiffs are not to be mated
to dogs of other breeds or unregistered dogs.
Only K.C. registered dogs/bitches
that conform as closely
as possible to the breed standard,
who are clear from known hereditary
abnormalities and faults will be
bred from. The Neapolitan Mastiff Club supports the K.C.
ongoing health program and would respectfully
request that members Hip and Elbow
score their dogs prior to starting
a breeding program. Also that the
said scores are logged with the K.C.
and that any dog having an unacceptable
high score will not knowingly
be bred from. The Neapolitan Mastiff Club
also acknowledges the need for the
K.C. Accredited Breeder Scheme
and supports it, thus encouraging members to join it.
This will in every way promote the general improvement
of the breed by encouraging the breeding of healthy
well-adjusted puppies by good breeding practices.
(b) All members shall endeavor to ensure that:
No bitch shall be mated before the age of 18 months OR
following her 6th birthday.
Nor shall a bitch whelp more
than two litters in a two-year period. Any bitch
that has had more than three puppies shall
not be mated within a six month period
and any member who
breeds five or more litters per year will
not breed more than one litter in a 12
month period from any one bitch.
(c) All members shall endeavour to ensure that:
No stud dog owner shall allow their dog to be used at stud
where the bitch would whelp before 2 years of age.
It is the responsibility of the stud dog owner to ensure
that they do not provide the service of a stud dog
in circumstances where the
Code of Ethics would be breached.
(d) All members shall endeavour to keep
accurate records of all mating, breeding,
sales and registrations.
Three-generation pedigrees will also be retained
for reference for each litter bred.
3. SALE OF NEAPOLITAN MASTIFF PUPPIES.
(a) All members selling puppies shall endeavour to ensure that:
all puppies will be at least 8 weeks of age when
passed to the new owners and will be in good health.
The club actively encourages breeders to identify each
puppy by way of micro-chipping and/or tattooing before being sold.
Each puppy will be accompanied by a
diet sheet, veterinary details, a signed pedigree and the
K.C Registration / Transfer of ownership form. Also if
any endorsements are placed on the registration,
the breeder must advise as such to the perspective owner
before the dog is sold. If such K.C documents
are not available at the time of sale, they will be forwarded
to the new owner as soon as possible after receipt from the K.C -
unless it was mutually agreed in writing,
prior to sale, that these documents would be withheld.
(b) All members selling puppies shall endeavour
to make every effort to ensure that: puppies are sold only
to responsible caring owners who can offer permanent homes.
Neapolitan Mastiffs shall not be sold to pet
shops, dealers or any third parties.
Puppies shall not be sold without the
buyer being made aware of any
defect or definite deviation from the standard at the time of sale.
No member shall knowingly misrepresent
the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise
or mislead any person regarding the performance of
any dog.
(c) All members selling puppies shall endeavour
to provide continuing advice and support to the new owner.
In the event of a new owner being unable to keep
a Neapolitan Mastiff, the breeder in the first instance OR
the stud dog owner shall be prepared
(with the assistance of Neapolitan Mastiff Welfare if necessary) to
find an alternative suitable home.
4. BREACHES OF THE CODE OF ETHICS.
(a) The Committee of the Neapolitan Mastiff Club
shall be empowered to act upon minor deviations
to the above Code of Ethics within its membership.
Where a complaint has been made, the members
involved must be prepared to offer an acceptable
explanation in writing and signed, if the Committee
(in any situation, which can appear
to be a breach of the Code of Ethics), requests it.
(b) Any member aiding or abetting any other
member to breach the Code of Ethics shall be as equally
responsible as the offender.
(c) Where there is substantiated evidence of malpractice
or mistreatment of Neapolitan Mastiffs, it
is the duty of the membership to report (in writing)
such to the Honourable Secretary of the Neapolitan
Mastiff Club. The matter will be considered by the
respective Committee which, following investigation
of the complaint, may consider such
matters under their respective rules.
(d) The Neapolitan Mastiff Club reserves the right
to refuse the renewal of membership or dismiss
any member from the club who has been proven
to be in breach of the Code of Ethics and has not
offered a satisfactory or reasonable explanation.
5. IMPLEMENTATION.
A Code of Ethics is a guideline, not Rules,
Regulations or a Legal Document.
Therefore Club Members
are agreeing to enforce them upon themselves
and other members in a civil and responsible manner.
I the undersigned have reviewed the Code of Ethics
and accept and agree with its contents.
