Club Show 2007 Results & Critiques
On Saturday the 14th of April, The Neapolitan Mastiff Club hosted a 14 Class Breed Open Show, at Coseley Leisure Centre & School near Wolverhampton and, having booked the entire Sports Hall for our 4th Breed Open show, we believe the general consensus of opinion from exhibitors, stewards, spectators and organisers alike, was one of great approval.
Thank you so much to Everyone with or without their Mastini who attended our Open Show, Your support was very much appreciated. I would like to acknowledge those, without whom there would be no show: our Judge who very graciously brought her expertise all the way from France, Anne-Marie Class.  Pamela Jeans-Brown for her continued support, her language skills, for accommodating our Judge and ensuring that our on-the-spot critiques for 1st and 2nd placed dogs were translated, written and in the hands of each exhibitor in record time. Pearl & Robin Chadwick for their stewarding skills and continued support of our Club and it's shows . Kathy, Wayne, Katie and Hailey South and Wayne's Sister Jackie for their support and for ensuring that the refreshments flowed all day.  Everyone including Royal Canin who sponsored the show by providing Prizes, Trophies, Plaques, Shields and Sashes.  Everyone who entered and or made Rosette / Show  and or Welfare / Rescue Donations.  Coseley Leisure Centre & School for accommodating us so well again this year, and last but by no means least, All Officers & Committee of The Neapolitan Mastiff Club who once again surpassed themselves in hosting yet another truly successful Breed Open Show. Thank you to you All, our Shows would not be possible without your support.
And so to the Show.......We could not have requested from "The Man Himself'!! a better day than the one he blessed us with, the sun was shining there was a gentle breeze and the Sports Hall remained cool throughout.  Our Club Officers and Committee rushed around like loonies from 7.00am and our first visitors and exhibitors began arriving at 9.00.
At 10.00am our Treasurer, Brian Hill, along with Committee Member and fellow exhibitor, steward and Judge, Angela Dunkley, held a pre-arranged ringcraft training class for anyone who wanted a pre-showing session, which I believe was very beneficial to many of our new comers who participated. With a little more understanding of what was expected, nerves were settled and a little more confidence gained. Oh! Yes! we all remember those days!!.
At 11.00am our Vice President and foremost authority on all that is canine, Keith Coleman, opened the show welcoming everyone in attendance and, introduced our Judge with a brief account of Anne-Marie's association with Il Mastino Napoletano, and The Neapolitan Mastiff Club in the United Kingdom.  Anne-Marie Class became a judge in 1981 and is qualified to judge many breeds including the Neapolitan Mastiff, the Dogue de Bordeaux, the Mastiff and the Bullmastiff to name but a few.
Anne-Marie is co-author with Gilbert Colas of Mastiff Bullmastiff...Un Peu De Cynotechnine En Prime , was one of the contributors, compiling the Dogue de Bordeaux chapter, of The Ultimate Book of Mastiff Breeds and writes regularly for both canine presses.
Anne-Marie has judged at shows across the globe, is a well-known authority on the Dogue de Bordeaux and, back in 1999 attended as one of our Guest Speakers, the Breed Assessment Day, hosted by The 'proposed' Neapolitan Mastiff Club & The 'proposed' Dogue de Bordeaux Club.  Anne-Marie is as renowned throughout the dog world here, as she is abroad and, we were truly honoured that she accepted our invitation to Judge our Neapolitan Mastiffs at our 4th Breed Open show.
The first 'un-official' Class NFC, not for competion, saw Neapolitan puppies, imports and welfare lads and lasses all taking part together  and all thoroughly enjoying their day. It was really excellent to see so many Mastini alltogether in the ring, it's not often we're exposed to that luxury and everyone showed their appreciation to each of the handlers and their dogs.
Anne-Marie's assessment continued in earnest with a thorough and precise inspection of each exhibit presented to her. Anne-Marie has an aura of calm around her which puts exhibits and exhibitors at their ease, which obviously helps in her very thorough hands-on assessment.  Anne-Marie also ensured that all exhibits were viewed from all angles whilst on the move, she scrutinised their movement and watched those toplines like a hawk.
At 1.00pm to the sound of much cheering and applause, Anne-Marie awarded Best Dog to Jane Walker-Brooks's: Janineo's Centurion Del Tuscaneo. Reserve Best Dog went to Steve Cox's: Rayvonley Lion, and Best Puppy Dog went to Karen Treloar's: Treloarneo Constantino. Congratulations to you all. Our Ladies all then retired to do lunch!
Following lunch, Judging resumed with enthusiasm, Anne-Marie continued with her inspection and assessment of the Bitches with the same methodical analysis she had used on the Dogs, making her decisions only after quiet contemplation and highlighting her reasoning for those decisions in her on-the-spot critiques.
At 4.00pm, again to much cheering and applause Anne-Marie awarded Best Bitch to George & Gloria Speight's: Dalnarck Bel.  Reserve Best Bitch went to Sean & Dawn Platts's: Dalnarck Druda Via Vallino. And Best Puppy Bitch went to Kevin & Mandy Berry's: Drosdelnoch's Lady Jade. Congratulations to you all.
With the arrival in the ring of, Best Dog and Best Bitch, came the head to head and the unenviable task that followed. The decision, which once again Anne-Marie made only after serious deliberation with her notes and her thoughts, brought the show to a head with the crowning of The Neapolitan Mastiff Club Breed Open Show 2007 - Best In Show: G&G Speight's Dalnarck Bel.  Many Congratulations to George, Gloria & Bella.
And, many Congratulations to all our exhibitors and their exhibits, you all did yourselves proud on the day and I know Anne-Marie was as pleased with her entry as she was with our request that she Judge at our show.
Anne-Marie Writes: I would like to say that I was really pleased to judge in such a friendly, relaxed and fair atmosphere.  It was a pleasure to have a real choice for the best dogs between several top level Neapolitan: massive, thick-set dogs, with good parallel planes of skull and muzzle, with good movements, a strong drive of the hindquarters and good reach of the forequarters.  Mastino have such a beautiful expression that it is a shame when you cannot see it because of too many wrinkles as necessary and a too deeply set eye, and I meet that with several dogs of great quality otherwise. It was one of my regrets.
I was delighted with the temperament of your dogs, very friendly. Best In Show, the Bitch, was for me the better balanced between head and movement, I loved the Best Dog for his bone and substance, Reserve dog for his head and size (he still needs to mature with the body) and the Reserve Bitch for her exceptional sound movement.
Veteran D/B (1): 1st Bucknall's Blue Lagoon: 8 year old male shown in excellent condition. Nice head for age with good parallel lines and good proportions. Eye could be slightly darker. Very good body construction, excellent hind quarters and angulation. Excellent feet, excellent muscle condition for age. Very good top line which he kept on the move. Very good sound movement.  Excellent temperament also. Congratulations!
Minor Puppy Dog (2) (1A): 1st Astbury's Chapi Ways Nesta: Really at the growing stage! Good size. Needs to develop more wrinkle as he matures. Very good skull, well carried ears. Correct topline for age. I hope he will form more bone and substance as he grows. Sound construction for age. Nice coat. Good movement but needs serious ring training, will need firm handling as he becomes adolescent.  Puppy Dog (3) (3A):  Junior Dog (3) (2A): 1st & BPD Treloar's Treloarneo Constantino: Masculine 9 month old baby-looking boy. Medium sized. good eyes, I would prefer a flatter skull, very good ear placement and carriage. Could have more parallel lines. Excellent wrinkle and dewlap. Very good bone and ribcage. Correct front feet and hind feet also. Good topline for age. Typical movement for a young dog which needs to tighten up.
Post Graduate Dog (5): 1st Jordan's Janineo Nerone: Very typical masculine dog who has the mass we are looking for in the breed. Very good head proportions with good parallel lines, good wrinkles. I would prefer a rounder eye and more open. Very good muzzle and dewlap. Excellent body construction when standing. Strong bones and muscle. Good typical feet but slightly open. Correct angulation. Strong hind quarters. Is able to move but could have more power in movement.
